All businesses need to maintain proper accounting records for taxation purposes and to retain the accounting records and associated documents for not less than 6 years. All companies, public or not must have their financial statements audited by an Auditor member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus.
International Accounting standards (IAS) are adopted by auditors and Government authorities since 1985 and financial statements are prepared under the provisions of IAS.

Cyprus as a European Union member has already adopted the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and the Accounting and Auditing Standards. A Committee of the Cyprus Institute provides technical knowledge and assistance to its members to this effect.
